Marengo, Iowa 52301
Though Marengo was not officially incorporated until July 1859, it has served as the county seat of Iowa County since 1845. Named after the plains of 'Marengo' in Italy where Napoleon won a great battle from the Austrian troops, the unique charm of Marengo stems from the natural beauty of the Iowa River Valley, its historical architecture and small-town values.
Along the trails and river banks of the Iowa River, one can see a wide variety of wildlife including bald eagles, hawks, songbirds, amphibians, reptiles, butterflies, dragonflies and more. Wildflowers provide cover, food and natural beauty to the area.
When touring Marengo, visitors are welcome to go through the Iowa County Courthouse. The current courthouse was completed in 1893 and placed on the National Register of Historic Places in June of 1980. Marengo's Pioneer Heritage Museum is a museum complex covering half a city block. Portraying life from the mid-1800s, items in the museum include an 1861 log house, an 1856 cabin, a 1930 filling station and an 1861 Rock Island depot.
